PREPARE Program: Information for Volunteers
The PREPARE Volunteer Experience
- Are you an international undergrad who would like to welcome new international undergrads to Cornell?
- Are you an American undergrad who has had experience living in another culture and knows how it feels to dive into something so different?
- Then use your experience to help welcome new international students to Cornell!
PREPARE is the International Undergraduate Pre-Orientation program, coordinated through the International Students & Scholars Office (ISSO). It is a four-day intensive program, where participants and volunteers have the opportunity to meet one another and help each other acclimate to life at Cornell. Each day, there are workshops on topics such as academic success, practical living, and health and safety. Volunteers lead groups of students to program events and assist with workshops, accompany new students to the shopping mall, and socialize at events such as sports night, international talent show, and more.
Who Participtes in PREPARE? Approximately 240 new students, plus 60 volunteers will participate in PREPARE.
Role of Volunteers: Volunteers are crucially important, and are expected to attend all events throughout the program. They may not be OCs in the university orientation, as conflicts of time and commitment often arise.
Dates: PREPARE 2013 will run from August 19-22, with a mandatory volunteer training session on August 17-18th.
Volunteers who have on-campus assignments for the fall will be allowed to move into their rooms beginning on August 16th (this date will be confirmed in April). Students who will be living off-campus must make their own arrangements with their landlord.
Volunteers can sign up online by clicking the volunteer sign up link on the left side of this page, and completing the registration form. The online registration form will not be available until April of 2013. Deadline for completing the online registration form will be announced at a later time. The ISSO will confirm your enrollment as a volunteer via email. Over the summer, the PREPARE student coordinators will also provide additional information on volunteer resposibilities and the mandatory training on August 17th and 18th.
Please let us know as soon as possible if you are unable to volunteer by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org so that we can contact another student from the volunteer waiting list. This is critical as each volunteer will be a mentor for a specific number of new students and we do not want to be short on volunteers.
Thank you and we look forward to working with you at PREPARE '2013!
