  • PREPARE Program: Information for Volunteers

    The PREPARE Volunteer Experience

    Who Can Volunteer?

    • Are you an international undergrad who would like to welcome new international undergrads to Cornell?
    • Are you an American undergrad who has had experience living in another culture and knows how it feels to dive into something so different?
    • Then use your experience to help welcome new international students to Cornell!

PREPARE is the International Undergraduate Pre-Orientation program, coordinated through the International Students & Scholars Office (ISSO). It is a four-day intensive program, where participants and volunteers have the opportunity to meet one another and help each other acclimate to life at Cornell. Each day, there are workshops on topics such as academic success, practical living, and health and safety. Volunteers lead groups of students to program events and assist with workshops, accompany new students to the shopping mall, and socialize at events such as sports night, international talent show, and more.

Who Participtes in PREPARE? Over 250 new students, plus 65 volunteers will participate in PREPARE.

Role of Volunteers: Volunteers are crucially important, and are expected to attend all events throughout the program. They may not be Orientation Leaders in the new student orientation which begins on August 21, as conflicts of time and commitment often arise due to training etc.

Dates: PREPARE 2015 will run from August 17-20, with a mandatory volunteer training session on August 15-16th.

When can Volunteers move in to on-campus housing?

Volunteers who have on-campus assignments for the fall will be allowed to move into their rooms beginning on August 14th (this date will be confirmed in April). Students who will be living off-campus must make their own arrangements with their landlord.

    How do I sign up?

Volunteers can sign up online by clicking the volunteer sign up link on the left side of this page, and completing the registration form. The online registration form will not be available until April of 2015. Deadline for completing the online registration form is May 22rd. Apply early as the 65 available spots will be filled quickly. The ISSO will confirm your enrollment as a volunteer via email. Over the summer, the PREPARE student coordinators will also provide additional information on volunteer resposibilities and the mandatory training on August 15th and 16th.

What should I do if my plans change over the summer and I am unable to volunteer?

Please let us know as soon as possible if you are unable to volunteer by sending an email to apr6@cornell.edu so that we can contact another student from the volunteer waiting list. This is critical as each volunteer will be a mentor for a specific number of new students and we do not want to be short on volunteers.

Thank you and we look forward to working with you at PREPARE '2015!
