Extend Your I-20 Status

We recommend that you apply for an extension at least 30 days before the end date on your I-20 (item #5) or DS-2019 (item #3) if you need more time to complete your program AND you will continue to be registered (if you will not continue to be registered, we cannot extend your end date). If you do not get the necessary extension prior to the end date on your I-20 or DS-2019, you will be in violation of your immigration status.

Remember to Extend the Visa Stamp in Your Passport

This procedure will extend your I-20 / DS-2019, but not the visa stamp in your passport. If you have an expired visa stamp in your passport, it is all right to remain in the U.S., but the next time you travel out of the country, you will need to apply for a new visa stamp to return to the U.S.
